Lifelike AI-generated images, from the Pope wearing Balenciaga to Taylor Swift in explicit scenes, have spread virally online, threatening society's ability to separate fact from fiction. Yet it's this very tension—of apprehension and awe, disgust and attraction, worry and comfort—that fascinates us about AI.

From Doha to Damascus, AI-backed tools are revolutionizing journalism, augmenting the creation, distribution and consumption of media. However, the motives behind AI's use remain contentious, with concerns about deception, undermining public trust and perpetuating societal divisions.

An inquiry into AI for investigative journalism, and journalists investigating AI, is needed now more than ever. We will uncover everyday misconceptions, consider unforeseen impacts, and envision a future where AI strengthens journalism and serves the greater good.

Through evidence-based storytelling, data visualization, case studies and artistic interpretations, the exhibition explores four key themes: Hindsight, Insight, Oversight and Foresight. Visitors will embark on a reflective journey into the past, discover the transformative power of AI, examine the ethical implications of its global influence and imagine a future where these technologies strengthen media while upholding core values.

Ai or Nay? Artificial vs. Intelligent features the work of over 20 works by international artists, immersive digital experiences, newly commissioned pieces, and loaned works from institutions such as the Computer History Museum (California, USA), Barjeel Art Foundation (Sharjah, UAE), and Qatar Museums (Qatar), the exhibition questions the opportunities and challenges AI presents in our contemporary life and how these relate to journalism.

Curated byJack Thomas Taylor, Curator of Art, Media, and Technology at the Media Majlis Museum, the exhibition presents the work by Jan Zuiderveld (Netherlands), Patrick Tresset (France/Belgium), and Adnan Ayub Aga (UAE/Portugal), alongside interactive and visual works by Amr Alngmah (Yemen/Egypt), Farjana Salahuddin (Bangladesh), graphic designer Hind Al Saad (Qatar), and Hadeer Omar (Egypt) and Bilge Emir (Turkey/Germany).

Complementing these artworks are digital installations created by the Media Majlis Museum, and a full-color illustrated glossary of AI and journalism terminology, available in both English and Arabic and published by Silvana Editoriale. The accompanying publication, edited by Taylor and Dubai-based journalist Katy Gillett, includes a foreword by Marwan M. Kraidy, Dean and CEO of Northwestern Qatar, an introduction by the curator, and an endnote by Alfredo Cramerotti, Director of the Media Majlis Museum.
